Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is the number one cause of cancer-related deaths among Belizean women.

Yet, it is one of the few cancers that can be prevented and eliminated through vaccination, regular screening, and early treatment.

Here are some key facts:

🎗️ Most cases of cervical cancer are caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of Human        Papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus transmitted through sexual contact.

🎗️ Most HPV infections clear on their own, but untreated persistent infection can lead to cervical           cancer over time.

🎗️ Cervical cancer often has no symptoms in its early stages, making regular screening essential.

🎗️ When detected early, cervical cancer is highly treatable and survival rates are high.

🎗️ HPV vaccination can prevent the majority of cervical cancer cases.

🎗️ Regular screening (Pap smear and/or HPV testing) can detect pre-cancerous changes before       cancer develops.

🎗️ Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can be eliminated as a public health problem             through vaccination, screening, and timely treatment.

🎗️ The World Health Organization has a global goal to eliminate cervical cancer.

🎗️ Belize has the tools to achieve elimination!
