🚭Tobacco use in Belize: A Grave Concern with Serious Consequences!🚫


Did you know that tobacco kills up to half of its users and over 8 million people worldwide each year? Shockingly, more than 80% of the world's 1.3 billion tobacco users reside in low- and middle-income countries, like Belize. This means our nation is not immune to the detrimental effects of tobacco. Let's delve into the eye-opening health and economic impact it has on our beloved Belize.


🌡️Health Consequences:

  • Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

  • Secondhand smoke contributes to diseases and deaths among nonsmoking adults and infants every year.

  • High prevalence of tobacco use among adults and youth in Belize, posing a significant risk to our population.

💰Economic Burden:

  • In 2017, the economic cost of tobacco use in Belize amounted to BZD 71 million (USD 35 million), including healthcare expenses and productivity losses.

  • Strain on our healthcare system and reduced workforce productivity impact not only smokers but also non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke.
